“Guna Yala is a dream of the past that in many places will never return”. Hernando Arnal

DISCOVER GUNA YALA. (The land of the Gunas)

THE GUNA PEOPLE & THEIR CULTURE

The Guna are a deeply proud and resilient indigenous group, and their culture remains a vital force in the region. They have successfully resisted outside influence, preserving their ancestral customs and maintaining their autonomy. The Guna language, Dule, remains widely spoken, and their strong connection to the land is reflected in their way of life.

One of the most striking symbols of their culture is their flag, which was adopted in 1925 after the Kuna revolted against Panamanian suppression of their culture. It features a swastika-like design. This is an ancient symbol that represents the octopus that created the universe, the four sides of the world, and the origin of its peoples, and is unrelated to the Nazi swastika—its cross is even positioned in the opposite direction.

The Guna women hold significant power in their society. They are the ones who inherit the land and are often seen wearing brightly colored blouses adorned with molas—intricate, hand-stitched textile art featuring geometric shapes or designs inspired by nature. In addition to their molas, they wear winis, colorful beaded leg and arm bands called chakiras, which are part of their traditional attire.

The Guna men are expert sailors and fishermen. They navigate their cayucos—handcrafted dugout canoes—using oars as rudders, a testament to their deep connection with the sea and their mastery of its currents.

The San Blas Islands, home to the Guna people, are one of the last true untouched paradises on Earth. Known locally as Guna Yala, this archipelago of about 350 small islands and islets, most of which are inhabited, lies along the Caribbean coast of Panama, extending all the way to the Colombian border. It is so close to the mainland that, from almost any island, you can see the lush jungles of the Darien region stretching into Colombia.

Here, white-sand beaches meet crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs are perfect for snorkeling. The landscape is dominated by palm trees and mangroves, creating an idyllic setting for those seeking both relaxation and adventure.

But it’s not just the stunning natural beauty that makes Guna Yala unique—it’s the people. The Guna have managed to preserve their culture, language, and way of life for generations. Their struggle to protect their land and traditions is the reason this place has remained so pristine.

A SUSTAINABLE PARADISE

The Guna people are a peaceful and friendly community, deeply connected to their land and culture. Above all, they recognize the privilege of living in such a pristine, untouched paradise—and it’s this deep respect for their environment that makes them such gracious and welcoming hosts to visitors.

They have welcomed us like family, sharing their incredible way of life with us. We are grateful to call this place home, even as “foreigners” we feel privileged to be a part of this community, honored by the trust they place in us.

However, we recognize that Guna Yala is a dream of the past that is at risk of disappearing. With its unspoiled beauty and sustainable way of life, it is more important than ever to protect this place from over-exploitation. We are committed to preserving the integrity of Guna Yala by promoting responsible tourism, respecting the environment, and supporting the Guna community in their ongoing fight to keep their culture and land intact.

We must continue to take care of this paradise, making sure that it doesn't "die" from success, as has happened with other once-pristine destinations. For us, finding this place was a gift, and it is our privilege to help preserve it for future generations.

NUEDI GUNA YALA. THANK YOU GUNA YALA!!
