“Guna Yala is a dream of the past that in many places will never return”. Hernando Arnal

CULTURE GUNA YALA. (The land of the Gunas)

The Guna people have managed to maintain their territory and customs over time thanks to their struggle and love for their land. They have also preserved their Guna language, also called “Dule”.

During the month of February they celebrate their autonomy, it is the month that commemorates their revolution in 1925. The flag of Guna Yala always surprises the visitor. The swastika that appears on the background of the three horizontal stripes (red/yellow/red) is an ancestral symbol and has nothing to do with the Nazi swastika. In fact, its cross is in the opposite direction.

Regarding the Guna women, they have a lot of power in Guna Yala, they are the ones who inherit the land. Their traditional way of dressing is very colorful and in addition to the blouses with their characteristic molas (textile with geometric shapes or elements of nature) they also use what they call “winis”, beads with colored balls called chakiras that they roll up their legs and arms.

The Guna men are great sailors and fishermen and aboard their cayucos, built by themselves with local trees, they sail using the oar as a rudder.

The Gunas are the indigenous people that inhabit the archipelago of the San Blas Islands in the Panamanian Caribbean. This archipelago is made up of approximately 350 small islands and islets, most of which are uninhabited. The archipelago extends along the coast of the Guna Yala region (as the locals call it) and reaches the Colombian border. It is so close to the mainland that, from practically all of its islands, you can see the jungle that extends all the way to the Darien, the Colombian border.

Its islands are of white sand and surrounded by coral reefs. Its vegetation is palm trees and mangroves. Its crystalline blue waters are ideal for snorkeling.

The Gunas are a peaceful and friendly people, and above all, they know how lucky they are to inhabit this wonderful corner of the planet.

We are immensely grateful to be here. We are “foreigners”, but they welcome us and treat us as part of their community.

Guna Yala is still a dream of the past that in many places will never return. That is why we must continue to take care of it in a sustainable and sustained way, but without trying to exploit it excessively so that it does not “die” of success as has happened before with other paradises.

For us it was a gift to discover it.

NUEDI GUNA YALA. THANK YOU GUNA YALA!!
